During his career with the Spartans, Ryan posted a 73-19-12 record, a 1.54 goals-against average, and 26 shutouts, an NCAA record.
Miller started 15 NHL games in his first year as a professional, compiling 6 wins for the Sabres before being sent down to Rochester.
He spent the rest of that 2002-03 season in the AHL and started 47 games, posting 23 wins with 2 shutouts for the Americans.
Last year, Ryan led the Amerks to the 2004 Western Conference Finals, while posting a 27-25-7 record with a 2.21 goals-against average, and a .925 save percentage during the regular season.
Miller did receive a brief NHL promotion in 2003-04, but unfortunately, he struggled in his three games for the Sabres and did not get another shot in Buffalo.
After stumbling a bit earlier this season, Ryan is again doing well in 2004-05 and was leading the AHL with 21 wins as of mid January.
The extremely quick goalie has put up 5 shutouts to compliment his 2.29 goals-against average, and .926 save percentage.
“He’s improved his play as the season has progressed,” said one Rochester source. “Once Ryan found his game, there have been no breakdowns.”
Our insider loves the fact that Miller has been more of a leader this season and has the ability to make his teammates better.
“Even when we don’t play well as a team, we can still win with Ryan’s contributions in net.”
Still, at 24 years old and with two experienced goalies ahead of him in Buffalo, Miller’s future with the Sabres doesn't seem quite as certain.
We see him as a great trade deal for the right team. Those in the know think he can shine in the NHL in the right squad. He drops three notches in the FAB50 Hockey to number 8.
